Everyone has preferences — and after years of working with garments (plus managing wardrobes for three children), I’ve learned that hanger choice genuinely impacts how clothes sit, how much wardrobe space you have, and even how well garments are protected over time.

Plastic Hangers: The Reliable All-Rounder
Plastic hangers are practical, lightweight, and dependable for everyday use.
Look for versions with shoulder divets — that small feature makes them far more versatile. They securely hold dresses, camisoles, and thin straps that would otherwise slide off smoother designs.
They’re not glamorous, but they get the job done efficiently and consistently.
Wooden Hangers: Premium Look, Practical Trade-Offs
This might be an unpopular opinion, but wooden hangers aren’t my favourite.
They take up considerable wardrobe space — often more than three times the width of slimmer options — which adds up quickly in busy family cupboards. They can also be surprisingly slippery without added grip.
From a garment-care perspective, there’s another consideration: if wooden hangers become damp, the finish or polish can transfer onto clothing and cause staining. That’s a risk many people don’t realise until it happens.
Wire Hangers: Short-Term Use Only
Wire hangers absolutely serve a purpose, particularly through dry cleaning. But they’re not designed for long-term storage.
They offer minimal structure, can be slippery, and if exposed to moisture they may rust — which can easily transfer onto garments and create stubborn stains.
Instead of discarding them, consider returning wire hangers to your dry cleaner. Most are happy to reuse them, making it a practical and responsible option.
Velvet Hangers: My Go-To Choice
Velvet hangers strike the best balance for me.
They prevent garments from slipping, look cohesive in the wardrobe, and their slim profile maximises space. They’re also versatile enough to handle a wide variety of clothing types and come in multiple colours if aesthetics matter to you.
The downside? They tend to break more easily than other styles. Still, their functionality keeps me coming back.
