Prewash, Detergent, Softener & Booster: What Goes Where?

Your washing machine drawer has three compartments, and each one is designed for a different stage of the wash. Here's what actually goes where.

Prewash

Only use this compartment if you've selected a prewash or soak cycle. It's ideal for heavily soiled items like workwear or muddy sports gear, giving them a head start before the main wash. For stubborn stains, it's even more effective to treat them directly before washing — like using Truly before it goes in the wash.

Detergent

This is where your laundry detergent goes. Released during the main wash cycle, it's responsible for breaking down dirt, oils, sweat, and everyday stains. Whether you use liquid or powder, this is the compartment that does the cleaning.

Fabric Softener

Softener is released during the final rinse to reduce static and leave clothes feeling softer and smelling fresh. However, it works by coating fibres with a thin film. Over time, that coating can trap odours and reduce the absorbency of towels and activewear. While many people enjoy using softener, it's worth remembering that true freshness comes from removing odours — not masking them.

Laundry Boosters

Boosters don't belong in the drawer — they go directly into the drum with the clothes. Oxygen-based boosters need direct contact with water and fabric to dissolve properly. In top loaders, add the booster first, let it dissolve in water, then add your laundry. In front loaders, add the booster to the empty drum before loading clothes. This helps prevent residue, patchy bleaching, and uneven cleaning.
