How to Hand Wash Woollen Jumpers Like a Pro

A quality woollen jumper is worth protecting. And while wool has a reputation for being high-maintenance, hand washing at home is far simpler than most people think — it just takes a little care and the right approach.

Start with a once-over. Before anything touches water, inspect your jumper for stains or lingering odours. If you spot a problem area, reach for Truly first. For odours, apply a generous amount directly to the affected area and leave it for an hour before washing. For stains, spray and gently agitate — then move straight to the wash. The boning tool is your best friend here: it works product into the fabric without any harsh pulling or pilling, lifting stains and neutralising odours without the need for scrubbing.

Wash with care. Fill a basin, sink, or clean bucket with cool to lukewarm water and add a wool-safe detergent. Submerge the jumper and gently work the water through the fabric with your hands. Avoid rubbing, twisting, or wringing — these are the fastest ways to stretch or damage wool fibres.

As for soaking: some people swear by a 10–15 minute soak before rinsing, others prefer gentle agitation followed by a thorough rinse. Both work. Do what feels right for the garment and go from there.

Remove water without wringing. One of the best wool-care tips around: roll your jumper inside a clean, dry towel and press gently. The towel absorbs the excess moisture without putting any stress on the fibres.

Reshape and lay flat to dry. While the jumper is still damp, reshape it by hand and lay it flat on a dry towel to air dry. Never hang woollen garments — the weight of the water will pull them out of shape over time.

With a little routine care — and Truly on standby for stains and odours — your woollen jumpers can stay cleaner, fresher, and looking their best for many winters to come.
