Beanies, scarves and gloves Oh My
- Winter accessories collect more dirt than you think. Beanies, scarves and gloves absorb oils, sweat, makeup and everyday grime with regular wear.
- A little maintenance goes a long way. Washing every few weeks and spot-treating between washes helps keep them fresh and extends their life.
- Store them clean. Washing and drying accessories before packing them away prevents lingering odours, stains and unwanted moth damage.
Why Your Beanies, Scarves and Gloves Need Washing Too
You wash your jumpers and coats—but what about the winter accessories that touch your face, hair and hands every day?
Beanies, scarves and gloves are some of the hardest-working items in your wardrobe, yet they’re often the most overlooked when it comes to cleaning. Over time, beanies absorb hair oils and sweat around the band, scarves collect makeup, moisturiser and skin oils, while gloves pick up everything your hands touch. The build-up happens gradually, making it easy to miss until lingering odours and stains appear.
The good news? They don’t need washing after every wear. If they’re part of your regular winter rotation, aim to clean them every couple of weeks, or sooner if they develop a noticeable smell. Regular care keeps fabrics fresher for longer and helps extend their lifespan.
Between washes, spot cleaning is often all that’s needed. A light spray of Truly on the inside band of a beanie, along the makeup line of a scarf, or on the palms of knit gloves can help lift oils and odours without the need for a full wash. Simply blot the area and allow it to air dry before wearing again.
When winter ends, resist the temptation to pack accessories away as they are. Clean and thoroughly dry everything before storing it in a cool, dark, dry place. Residual body oils and odours can attract moths and become harder to remove during storage.
A little care throughout the season means your favourite winter accessories stay fresh, last longer and are ready to wear as soon as the temperature drops again.
